Wordless Wednesday

Just one of the Hawkins families that I've now discovered included their mulatto children in the household. Martha Ann Benny Hawkins is pictured here with her father, his wife, and her siblings.

  1. My God! You have to wonder what life was like for Martha?! How she was treated by the wife {who is not so pleasant looking by the way!} & her siblings...

We know the stories but rarely do we get to see the images!

    Amazing...

  3. Yeah, Luckie. But from what I've read (so far) about this family, Daddy acknowledge her from the start, and even left her to his sister in his will to be her "guardian" after his death.

Taneya, I found this on the internet, along with a couple of other multi-colored Hawkins pictures. None are in my direct line :(, but that are all of the same family. I'm finding out more and more about this family every day, and I'm sure ya'll will be hearing about it!

  4. That's a great story! Wouldn't you have liked to have been a fly on the wall when Mr. Hawkins announced to Mrs. Hawkins that he was bringing home a baby?

  5. Tracy, I'm thinking that perhaps Martha came with the package, since she appears to be so much older than her father's children with his wife. What do you think? :)

  6. Glad to hear Daddy attempted to do right by Martha -- it's a story not heard of much.

But I guess, the fact that she was included in the family picture speaks volumes all by itself.

She actually looks just like him!:-)
