Tombstone Tuesday - Jacobina Sherrod Hawkins

My third-great grandmother, Jacobina/Jacobine Sherrod Hawkins, wife of Philemon; mother of Archibald, Madison, Lucy, Nathaniel (my gg-gf), Fannie, Mary, and Benjamin. Her grave is located in Oakwood Cemetery, Louisburg, NC.  Photo Source: http://www.findagrave.com/ (Memorial# 41496203)

    1. Mavis! I'm reviewing some of the comments on my blog, and I see I told you this grave is in Raleigh, but it's in Louisburg - just as the caption under the photo says! :)

  2. Hey Mavis,
    This ancestor was a member of the slave-owning part of my ancestry, which I've discovered as a result of my research, and have confirmed via DNA testing. The majority of my ancestors lie in unmarked graves in "Colored" Cemeteries, or in locations that will not likely ever be identified.
    Oh, and yes, this tombstone is a Raleigh Cemetery. Thanks for reminding me that I needed to add the location, as well as the source information!

  3. I love the name Jacobina. The only other place I've seen it was on my husband's lineage, one of his ancestors in Spain! It was not a common name there, either, since it is not a Saint Name (catholic) we suspect she was from a converso (Jewish) family. Old testament names were common in New England, but I had never seen it here until your photo from North Carolina.
